Julia, I'm so excited! This will, indeed, be fabulous. I'm a more dangerous design soul than you – I really don't know what I'm doing, but sometimes I think I do.
That said, go to Lowe's and pick out colors that YOU LIKE. In all the reading I've done on color in design, that is the main piece of advice; even if it's green or orange or purple, whatever color you like will make you feel happy in your home. Forget about resale value; you can always repaint if you want to sell, and you might as well be happy in the meantime.
Figure out a palette of several colors you want to have throughout your home and where you would like to see them; from there you can figure out how to tie them all together, or where to put hues (there are typically three shades on a paint chip, each meant for something specific, but what they are eludes me now – ask the color specialist).
